Conquering Fear of Flying

Counseling Today Online
Aug. 30, 2018:

Research indicates that up to 40 percent of the general population experiences flight-related anxiety. One of the things that makes aviophobia, or fear of flying, so common is that the average person just doesn't do it that often.

A key aspect of overcoming
aviophobia is breaking things
into small pieces — both with
therapeutic preparation and
with coping mechanisms on
the day of the flight. A
counselor can help clients
learn to tolerate the uncomfortable feelings that sometimes come with flying, and redirect anxious thoughts to focus on the reasons they're getting on a plane — such as a long-awaited trip or family visit.
